Hello, So I still know, people like TDR... well some people...
-=Click here to go stright to the tutorial for beginners=-
All of my time in TDR has been dedicated to skinning since it came on steam, No really.. The only time Ive enterd a race is to see a part of a map I rember, or take a screenshot of a skin, Ive not finished a race yet. and Im sure everyone new to the game will just cheat and use ped pasher to instafinish most races. When I first played it back in the early 2000s, I only had the eagle.
anyhow skinning, wana learn how to skin? I shall tell you my basic ways of skinning, testing, etc,
Hopefully this is a usefull database for any wanabe skinner, or even experianced skinner.
with TDR its not as simple as selecting a car, making a skin, while its much easyer to work with than C2, or C1 multiple textures, and it has the ability to test in the menue, TDR cars are... lets say Not 100% in the quality department, with texture errors, oddly placed textures, unusual model shading, dark areas.
so lets test this out, Ive done this for you, with a basic TDR test skin, I make a new skin, make it solid green, and make the samage skin solid pink, this is the easyest way to pick up any errors that might affect your skins.. so lets mee the cars.

TDR Skin Basics [Warning LOTS of images]
-=Basic skinning guide for very beginners=-
This is a tutorial to show the basics of skinning, how TDR works, and some very basic texture edting, This
tutorial is designed for very beginners to try get them into making new skins :P thats how I started my
modding afterall.
First find the car you want to skin, You might want to check the database I did up there to find a car you
atleast think is skinnable, Nothing worse than making something and reolising TDR screwed it up.
For this im going to make a simple GMC skin of the Tress Hombres.
So go to garage and find your car,
Then click the paint button to bring yourself to the painting menue.
After you are here click New.
Type in the name of your skin.
You can see a tab at bottom saying normal, damage, and active, Click active to make this the paintjob the
car uses, and if you click damage it will show you the car in its damaged skin.
Now you can see its on the list, What I do here is leave the game running and alt tab out (wich is why I
have 3 hours on record for TDR despite not 'Playing' it, anyway Go to your steam folder, For me its C:
\Games\Steam\SteamApps\common\Carmageddon TDR 2000\Assets\Cars\Mighty_Muff\Skins please note: Car folder
names are not allways the same as the car, but they often give a clue, such as the boss being named,
Mustang.
In this folder you will see two BMP files with the car skin... I know BMP sucks.. but thats just what it
does.
Here is a closeup of both textures, Most cars in TDR are 512x512 single textures.
So now for some editing tips, the best way to reskin cars for ME (this is just opinion) is to seprate the
car body, from all other components, this way its easyer to reskin, and make multiple skins without having
to edit it all each time, I also save the body texture for later use.
As you can see its now easy to recolor, and edit, so Im going to make this truck Red, This is diffrent on
whatever program you use I guess, But I use PSP7, All I did was slightly brighten the image, then paint over
it with a bright red with the color to target tool.
Then simply paste that over the existing skin, this can be very usefull for making more complex skins,
paintjobs, and masks to put over textures to make camo paintjobs etc.
Now to add the finishing GMC touches, I personally use lots of images from the internet for this, Its
usually not that hard to find what you are looking for, Im just going to google '90 Gmc sierra front' after
scrolling down a while I found this
Also be sure to look in the Related images to the right, Theres nothing in there this time, But sometimes if
you are having a hard time finding a texture, it pops up in related images when you find one thats 'allmost
right'
Now I just cut out the grille, headlights And I paint over the
Then just paste the headlights over the blanked area, and resize to fit. New front end!
Now im just going to add some bits, The colored bed, the rear white stripe, gmc badge, and there you have
it, A finished skin, a small edit atleast
Feel free to coppy and paste that onto a skin to use if ya want, I saved it as a Png,
now just got to TDR click the update button and it will tell you it will be a few seconds, Then your skin
will arive ingame.. You want to test this ingame Before making a damage skin, Just to make sure.
Damage skin time, There are a bunch of diffrent ways to do this, The easy way is to use a pre made texture effect,
But that never looks quite right.
If you want to make a nice damage skin I sugest using masks, transparent parts, and hand painting parts of damage on for the best effect, It dosent take as long as you think, Heres a damage texture I quickly made.
Now as I said, tools are diffrent, so if you want me to explain exactly how to make a damage mask in PSP7 just ask and ill be happy to explain.
Now the last part, is a part that TDR dosent do properly at first, Go back to the game, and click update again on your skin, the damage skin does not have to be selected, Updating. updates both skins at once.
What you will see is that TDR show a new damage skin, but dont panic, Its loaded, it just dosent show at first, Simply go out of paint back to garage, and click paint again, Youll see that the new damage skin is now there.
Now you have a finished car, So keep at it, Who knows what you can create.
Happy skinning.
also what the hell is this?
It looks like it was taken out of some 'spooky' kids haloween game, The ghoul express... I need to find out how to edit allready ingame textures :/ I wana skin maps, and drones. and turn TDR into a carma game, with phsyics changes.. etc

Nice tutorial, Maxine!
Don't forget that you can generate TGA files directly and then use higher resolution to increase the detail level!
[edit] and this allows you to change all textures as well, even wheels etc.

Sorry for being off-topic, but my Firefox can load your 200+ image post perfectly fine. But if a page contains one single video? Oh, I can wait for ten seconds before I get control back.

Thank you Maxine, now I know why game crashes everytime I tried to make new skin. Those are Nosebleed cars which you can't reskin.
