Bloody hell, that Bel Air folds like paper..

From looking at the video again, I'd say the chassis of the Bel Air was well rotted. Look at 0:58 into the video, the cloud of dust (rust) coming out of the sills.

Ralph Nader was probably right, cars of the 50's weren't safe at all.

What speed do you reckon that was at?

Also, I quite like the look of the white-walled wheels on the Malibu

What it lacks in safety (and I guess "practicality" these days) it makes up for in style.

The interior mirror dice were a nice touch!

And at Random Monkey, it was at 40mph.

Indeed! Those X-frames had nothing along the perimeter / rockers and such! I guess they seeked out the biggest, weakest-framed chevy they could find, took out the engine (which they did, making the front even easier to crumple) to try and make their new disposable shit box look better?!

Earlier this week, my brother was stopped at an intersection in his '80 Mirada...and got rear-ended by a Saturn SC-1. The Saturn's front end was totaled. There wasn't even a mark on the Mirada. Seriously, I can't even tell where it hit!

Slayer still has that Mirada? Hahaha, that car is awesome.I wish he made one for Carma with the 360CI V8 in it and have it black.

(I know he made one,it's white with a slant-6 in it.Nice car.)

Sorry for being offtopic.

Well, this isn't the same video I seen on Jalopnik.

This one has more info, but fewer views/angles.

View Video

I hadn't noticed the rust dust before. Still, it looked rather salvageable(before they crashed it).

(By the way, how do you display a video here?)

I HAD one of those Belairs! 1959 all black exterior, gray interior! And screw all this safety BS! Cruising down the highway at midnight in that thing with the AM radio playing some moldy old music with the eerie green dash lights shining down was all right! The one in that video was beautiful! What the hell was even the point of making it? Those people should be beaten with logs! :supermad:

They needed to find an educational way of getting rid of the car?

It looked like a beauty.. Beats all these new cars, they're all just clones of each other.

Well also the newer car also has a heavily reinforced frontend for such crashes, crumple zones, unibody construction that cars 50 years ago didnt have! So they made a video to show something obvious like it'll hold up better? Well NO SHIT! Ralph Nader was mentioned, he's just another idiot who never had a driver's license who wants to tell people what they should be able to drive and how to drive it. Hang him. :suicide:

Don't you just love the rear end on a Bel Air.

Some of the comments on that blog are horrible.....

This one,especially pissed me off:

"At least the ‘59 didn’t take anyone else with it when it died.

Too bad the ‘59 didn’t qualify for CFC; the owner could have purchased an ‘09 Malibu with it while the straight-6 drank liquid sand."

Prick. :supermad: :supermad: :supermad:

the 50s are the best times of all, i never managed to get ahold of a good 50s car, mainly due to the fact that all i can afford is the shit that other people dont once, heh really i had a car so rusty once that you could poke holes in it with a screwdriver. we all must have had one at one point,

still nothing beats driving around in something over 50 years old listning to Thurston Harris, and Dion and the Belmonts, fuzzy dice swinging in the mirror, a v8 running, soon as i can find one im getting back into 50s mode, but well i cant find what i want really.... oh well i can just not for the price i wana pay,

anyway back on topic,

They needed to crash cars to find that out? so nobody knows that new cars are safer than old ones yet? we must spread the word !?

yeah looks like economicalbrick said, no engine, i duno if it might go back that far or what? all i knows is safty goes a long way, but does anybody hever EVER, look at a safty rating? the cars ive owned, ive had some very unsafe cars, but nobody cares, would you rather have a car that is actuly good to drive? fun? stylish?

yah, i know nobody who buys it on safty, apart from mabye over protective minivanmoms, te trick is to avoid actuly crashing head on into another truck,

Just for curiosity to see how safe i am i wana see,

Apparently the Bel Air in the video had a straight-6 engine in it.
