C2 on Linux?

Post by random_monkey »

Anyone ever got C2 working on Linux?

I'm gonna be putting ubuntu on dual boot and figured it /might/ (though I doubt it) open up the possibility of using it again.

i just switched to Sabayon Linux a week ago, and i have not started the project, but the findings and info i will post here when i can

is ubuntu gentoo based? (do you install software by typing 'emerge' in de konsole?)

i think it might be possible, seeing as C2 does not need directX 9 (there is this software WINE, which atm has problems with directX 9, but the previous versions seem to be sorted out)

in fact:

there has been somebody busy with it

i've seen the C2 screenshots running in WINE with(!) GlideWrapper

how 'bout them apples!

Oh, i missed this thread.

I'm on Linux SuSE 10.2 and used the Glidewrapper.

There's some sort of tutorial on my site.

ubuntu uses apt-get, not emerge...

I'm trying to install carma2 under wine, but it hangs as soon as I click the 'Install' logo - I'd install in windows, but apparently Linux doesn't like NTFS partitions?

hhmmmmhhhh

C2 could be run from cd, what about copying all files to the hard drive and then just start c2? (not the setup~)

NTFS is read-only on Linux.

You have to use FAT32 if you also want to use it with Windows.

If you don't use windows there's no reason for not putting it on ext3 or Reiser

Easiest is to install with Windows and then copy the folder (even from an other computer if needed)

there are a few problems for me:

all my movies and music that i have so carefully collected is on that ntfs disk

i have no means to temporarily store all dat data and reformat the disk

i have misplaced my carma 2 cd, which i am really bummed about because it was a disk that never gave me any problems, even in XP it would run without any patch or things like that.

Update:

I've copied it all across and put the patches in place, but when I load it under wine I get a "Could not open the general settings file" error, even though general.txt is there :/

i've been trying carma 1, but due to my videocard (ATI) i am not able to play ANY 3D game (as it is now)

maybe someone will solve the problem for me by making linux support ATI (or actually ATI supporting linux)

i do have openGL working, but only to a degree, i get messages bitching at me that i am missing Xfree86 DRI extention, and it shouldn't because i'm using Xorg, not Xfree.

something that interests me, random monkey, if you execute 'glxgears' from a terminal (like konsole) what output do you get?

[font class="small">code:[/font]

sjeses@localhost ~ $ glxgears

Xlib: extension "XFree86-DRI" missing on display ":0.0".

10622 frames in 5.1 seconds = 2102.906 FPS

10509 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2093.274 FPS

10589 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2112.816 FPS

@random_monkey

Did you start 'wine carma2.exe' from the carma2 directory ?

XFree86-DRI is een extension to Xorg.

It's basically the hardware acceleration.

Enabling it is part of the graphic driver installation

I'ts been a long time ago I did something with Carma2, but recently I started experimenting with Carma2 again under Linux.

I have it now installed on my laptop with OpenSuSE 11.3 and ATI graphics and on my PC with Gentoo Linux and NVIDIA graphics.

I have copied the gamefolder to the Linux home folder so I'm running it from an ext3 filesystem

Just some tips and tricks:

I have installed the Zeckensack Glidewrapper. I have set 'try hires' and set frequency on 'don't care'

I have wine configured to use the Alsa sound drivers and to use a 'virtual desktop' so that the game won't be stretched on a widescreen monitor. I couldn't get the hires working but in the end setting the virtual desktop to 1280x960 did the trick.

To make videos of the game I use xvidcap which works quite nicely and even records sound (you can even mix it with music if you want). On my PC I have a very crazy sound setup so I have not got sound-recording work, but on my laptop, with only one /dev/dsp device it worked after I set the right level in the mixer.

xvidcap uses oss instead of alsa, so you need either OSS emulation in the kernel (I have) or use an emulator like aoss of padsp (Pulseaudio).

For OpenSuSE i could install xvidcap from the Packman repository, for Gentoo I had to download the program and compile it.
