can anyone tell me why my pc reboots without even showing the evil blue screen every time i play a game?
does not matter what game, even carmageddon and worms share the suffering.
it always happens about 10 minutes after i started the game up. and the second time it is earlier, and the third is earlier and so on.
now my system is fairly stable, i can leave it downloading massive amounts of movies and stuff an meanwhile listen to webradio. it only seems to happen in 3d applications
even 3d screensavers. normal savers work perfectly.
strange

It sounds like your pc gets too hot rendering any 3d, try this: http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php software thingy, mind you it doesnt work on all systems.
It gives you the option to change your fan speeds and check your overall systems heat.
I think they put an function in XP that when your pc gets too hot it automaticly restarts when too hot and without any blue screen.

They say you can also open your case and stick your hand in it to feel the airflow/heat...but not really advised (eg. shocks/short circuit)

Re: computer hardware knowlage
I did have the same problem but, for me, it was due to a wrong place for a memory bar ...
I got a 128 Mo bar and a 256 Mo and the 256 was right ahead the 128 and my comp had reboot problem.
I change the place of the 256 bar and had no more problem ...

I also had some strange things when i just bought my current computer because it was'nt plugged into a grounded wallplug. (when i touched the casing and the wallmounted heatingtubes at the same time i got an electrical shock).

Re: computer hardware knowlage
You were staticly loaded or your case wasnt correctly isolated and you were the link that brought the pc power to an earth = shock.
Re: computer hardware knowlage
i know it is not a heat problem, because i opened up the case (removed one side) and pointed a fan towards it that will blow myself away if i'm not carefull.
*insert skinny joke here*
i'll try the memory thing
and i'll mention that i use XP.
the thing is, i use a radeon 9600 card, which has a feature called VPU recover. it used to work fine, and as followed:
when the videocard does not respond anymore, only the card gets rebooted, you switch back to the desktop with a message that the videocard is reset and you can resume where you left off.
that doesn't happen anymore.
just the sound *click click* (like an electronic switch), instantanious black vision and system restart

Re: computer hardware knowlage
It could be anything, from a windows update that has overwritten previous drivers, to a hardware problem itself (memory, graphics, processor heatsink) its trial & error unfortunately..
Try this though
Right Click on My Computer
Advanced
(settings on) startup & recovery
& untick the auto restart on error
now, next time it crashes, it should go back into windows and get you random error, hopefully from that you'll be able to pin-point whats causing the problem

Re: computer hardware knowlage
Sounds like its the memory for me..
Did you checked if your memories are tight in place??
Did you tried to remove and set them in place again??
As mentioned before it could be a lot of things,
Good luck there
