Map Ideas

Post by coffeycup »

I'm all fired up about creating new levels (only took 8 years) and I thought I'd open it up.

I'll kick it off with two that I have using pix I found on the web for ideas

Montezuma's Revenge

In the tradition of the Splat Pack levels Mayan Mayhem, Aztec Wreck and IncaPacitied.

Image

Mayan city/ruins filled with tourists, lots of ramps and hidden rooms

Noncars:

palm trees

rolling rocks

Area Filthy One

There's tons of hirez satellite views of Roswell that can be referenced

Image

Using peds from the silo levels with hidden underground labs

Noncars:

UFO

F14s parked

cactus

drone cars

drone F14s taking off

I've already started working on Montezuma's Revenge.

It looks exciting !

Montezuma's map could be a good map for ramps and high jumps !

Will we have some image of your work ?

I find more "normal everyday places" make the best maps, the only official maps I ever enjoyed playing on all carma games were the city maps, I suppose they just feel more natural as far as car wrecking goes.

I know you prefer things a "little left center" or whatever it was like your page says! So im not about to tell you what kinda map you should make, I know its long grueling work, or maybe whatever you're modelling with makes it easier.. I dont know.

I get in the mood to want to make a map again now and then, but its insane time consuming work.

I've been playing Just Cause recently, and the map in that is great, although it is probably too big for C2.

Yeah, I drive the city levels a lot too, but I like the 'outdoor' levels too, especially some of the converted C1 tracks

like 'I scream in the Sun' and 'Off Quay' with the cliff roads over looking the ocean.

Since a lot of the add-on tracks already are city levels like , Nukleen, Bleak and Nothing cities

I wanted to do something different.

Besides, this is a city level, just a really freakin' old city.

Image

I turned in 'onion skinning' to show the interior rooms. Little black blob at lower right is a car.

I'm still laying everything out, so nothing is final yet. But I did get what you see in the picture into the game last night.

I thought I grabbed some screens, but Fraps wasn't running so I didn't get any pix.

Thanks, I'm having fun with it.

Another idea for an 'everyday' map...

Shopping Maul

Sprawling acres of parking lot, parked cars and drone cars circling, looking for parling spots.

Large 'super stores' have interior for more carnage. Lots of plate glass to break!

Noncars:

drone cars

light poles

mailboxes, phones, etc.

trees

Levels can be about twice as big as the stock C2 ones --> see Chevy II's Bleak City 2.0 it's pretty huge.

So, sure you could have a drive from the city to the country.

Traffic jams: I think there may be a limit to how many drones you can have in a map.

I think there is some sorta size restriction, I was making one and it was so big the bumper cam would drop at some point and no longer follow the car, I think small block came across this once too.

Great work Coffey!

Here's something I'm working on, will have at least 80 houses when it's done (Attachment).

I'm also thinking of adding a large grass area with a soccer field and trees.

I'd like to see a map similar to the woods. Like a forest with a path and dirt roads and hidden mines and stuff like that. One thing I would absoluty love is an old broken bridge and a riverbed. I want something from out of Smokey and the Bandit or Dukes of Hazzard. I find that a lot of the jumps on levels have really big ramps for lots of air and it just seems to be a turn-off for me. I just want a realistic jump. Beaver Woods comes close, but I want something a little smoother.

Now that's a good idea, 'Trailer Park Boys' gone wrong! What would make it better if someone made the characters from the show, Ricky, Julian, Bubbles, etc. Now that would be entertaining.

this will be a big map. I have to fill it with stuff.

@Junkpile: I like the trailer park idea. it sounds like a good section for a larger map, a whole red-necked themed one

@Qwerty: I've been thinking of ways to do forests within the limitations of the C2 engine. You wont have hundreds of individual trees, I don't think.

Looks like you'd have plenty of room for a trailer park! LOL

Actually, I was also thinking that a map with lot's of room to just go would be excellent as well. As long as it isn't too bumpy & doesn't end in a wall on all sides.

Actually, I think I need to reduce the terrain object some,

in PT2 nothing appears in the Top and the 3D viewports - no matter how much I zoom out.

I'll never be able to do opponent paths or place noncars without a top view.

Even at 3/4 size it'll be a big level.

Keep in mind that if the main actor represents such space that the view auto-zooms beyond the clipping distance when you load it, zooming out further will NOT improve things.

Oh hey, I see you're using SketchUp.

Don't make the same mistake I made.

Even though SketchUp will allow you to make the whole scene from just one object, that's not a good idea. First time I did that. When it came time to export it, the textures got screwed up. Prolly cause there was like 40 textures slapped onto the one object.

Break it up into a bunch of components, make each house or small group of houses into a component that you can then copy and paste into a huge neighborhood in no time.

Also, I see you're using cars and people from the SketchUp library for scale. You'll want to scale it way down before you export it. Way down so that cars are the size of a Hot Wheels car.

(If you have BeMax, import the limey.3ds to see what size you'll want your stuff. It'll be imported right at the 0,0,0, point, really tiny with its nose pointing at the ground)

Thanks for the tips!

Yea, currently its all one huge object...

I guess I'll have to start over from the save before I made all the 80 houses then... LoL

But that shouldn't be a problem, won't take too long.

About the scale, when I imported the cars from the library they were as big as the whole map!

So I had to scale them down ALOT, first to 25% and then 30% to get it right. The road width for example is only 400mm. (Not sure if you use that measurement though)

I'll try to import the limey to see how close I am.

Anyway thanks again, I'll get back to it as soon as i get home from school!

Before you start over, import it and see how it looks.

Maybe I just fucked something up when I did it.

But I would definitely make at least some of the buildings as seperate objects,

if only for reuse around the map, especially where your map would have lots

of identical looking houses.
